Geraldine Margaret Savage
31 December 1918 - 24 January 2012
Peacefully with her daughter Barbara at her side, Geraldine (Gerry) Savage passed away at Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital on January 24, 2012.
Gerry was predeceased by her husband Cam, her parents John and Alice Garnett, her siblings and their spouses: Iris (Bob), Enid (Bob), Harold (Vi),
Dorothy (Angus), Deane (Fred) and Dulce (Elmer) and sons-in-law Ian Shepherd and Bob Murray. She is survived by her children: Elizabeth, Gordon (Cheryl), Catherine and Barbara, grandchildren: Megan (Ben Aprim), Kathleen (Zach Vickery), David Shepherd, Greg Shepherd, Jason (Susan) Savage, Neil (Tara) Savage, Brennan, Graham and Allison Murray as well as great-grandchildren: Emily and Matthew Aprim, Brandon Savage and Claire Vickery. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Elva Savage and Frances Savage and many nieces and nephews.
Gerry was born on December 31, 1918 in Miami, MB where she attended school until grade 11. She graduated grade 12 in Winnipeg at United College before training as a nurse at the Winnipeg General Hospital. She then attended McGill University in Montreal, PQ and obtained a certificate in Public Health. She worked for the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) in Brockville, ON and Winnipeg, MB.
Gerry first met Cam when he apprenticed at Westaway Pharmacy. All the Miami girls made excuses to go to the drug store to see the new guy but it was Gerry that caught his eye. They shared a passion for sports, especially football (Go Bombers Go!) and curling. Gerry's favorite station on the TV was any station with sports programming, especially TSN.
Gerry was a traditional stay at home wife and mother while the children were young but she did return to nursing, working as a special duty nurse at the
General Hospital over a period of several years. Gerry was also active in the Women's Auxiliary of the Pharmacists of Manitoba and volunteered with the
White Cross Guild at the Health Sciences Center for many years. When Cam retired they returned to Miami and became very involved in the community activities especially anything sports related. They regularly participated in the MSOS Games in many different parts of the province. Gerry was a regular fixture at the Miami Friendship Center for Wednesday morning pool and was always up for any of the card games and tournaments. In later years she joined in the activities and games at the Collingwood and always had a wonderful time.
Most interesting in Gerry's eyes were the activities of her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. She always enjoyed interacting with them when they visited. Gerry also enjoyed baking cookies for them and could usually be seen needle pointing a Christmas stocking for the latest addition to the family! The stockings had to be different so she had great fun choosing the design for each
one.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Notre Dame Hospital and the home care ladies at Miami for the compassionate care they gave Mom during the past year.
The funeral service was held at Miami United Church on Monday, January 30, 2012 at 11 AM. If desired a donation may be made to the building fund for the new Notre Dame Hospital (please make cheques payable to: Notre-Dame Health Foundation in care of: Acute Care Centre Project, PO Box 336, Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, MB, ROG 1MO), to the Miami United Church (PO Box 164, Miami, MB ROG 1HO) or to a charity of your choice.
